The talk will cover introduction to open data & civic tech and working with open data tools and approaches used locally in Malaysia and internationally. It will also cover some cases of how lack of government data and statistics, as well as suppression of this information impacts governance and communities.

Malaysia could soon approve several outrageous bills that would impose criminal penalties for everyday use of the internet. Over the course of the next week, our parliament will consider amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Sedition Act, among other laws.
We will explore and discuss the recently released Panama Leaks database, and it's relevance for corruption and transparency with datasets we have in Malaysia on politicians, GLCs and construction companies.

This event aim to update stakeholders on state of Digital Rights in Malaysia related to privacy, freedom of expression and innovation. It will look into the impact of digital rights in light of disclosure of possible surveillance tools purchased by the government, proposed legislative amendments such as Communication and Multimedia Act, Sedition Act, Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and calls for stronger Intellectual Property Right restrictions via trade agreements.
The workshop event shall aim to facilitate learning for the audience to explore new ideas as well as to enhance existing initiatives that shall hold public officials accountable through the use of public information. The potential collaboration among the participants (as generated from the learning and discussion process during the held sessions) will also be expected from this event.
